History
The history of Salzgitter Mannesmann Handel GmbH
Salzgitter Mannesmann Handel GmbH is the management company of the Trading Division within the Salzgitter Group. In terms of corporate law, it can look back on a history of over 60 years, starting with Otto R. Krause Eisengroßhaus GmbH based in Düsseldorf.
However, the Salzgitter Group and its predecessor companies have had experience in trading for almost 100 years. The first Group-owned trading company was founded in 1917 under the name Werkhandelsfirma des Peiner Walzwerks GmbH. Founded towards the end of the First World War, this initial “works trading company” quickly developed into an efficient and versatile nationally and internationally active trading group with numerous locations, companies and direct export representatives, which was repeatedly restructured and adapted to the needs of customers over the decades.
From 1970 - following the merger of Ilseder Hütte with the Steel Division of the then Salzgitter Group - the national and international trading companies, which at that time were still operating under the umbrella of Peiner Stahlhandel GmbH and Peiner Stahlexport GmbH, were gradually merged with the Salzgitter steel trading companies under the management of the then Salzgitter Stahl GmbH, from 1992 Preussag Handel AG.
In 1998, the Trading Division with its lead company Salzgitter Handel GmbH emerged from these roots as part of the spin-off of today's Salzgitter AG and the start of the Group's reorganization. Since 2005, the importance of the steel tube product and the Mannesmann brand in the trading sector has been increasingly expressed through the expanded company name Salzgitter Mannesmann Handel GmbH.
